Denise Lorenz taught ballet in her native Michigan at an early age. This led to jazz, Scottish dance, Spanish dance and other ethnic dance forms. Dance imparted an interest in motion, change and space when she approached the visual arts. After the first few art courses Lorenz knew she would become an intaglio printmaker to capture motion in the physical and chemical processes of etching.

After receiving her M.F.A. in Texas, Lorenz taught studio courses for Sam Houston State University, Lone Star College-North Harris and LSC-Kingwood. As Professor of Art at LSC-Montgomery, she specialized in Design, Drawing and Color Theory. Summers offered  travel to art festivals in Michigan, Ohio and Texas for fifteen years. She currently teaches lecture and studio courses online for LSC-Cy Fair.

Recent artwork addresses the textures and colors of rocks, which have accumulated on the lakeshore. This work returned Lorenz full circle to the photoreal drawings of her early work. Minute tracings of fossils and minerals are washed by bubbling waves at the instant the waves come ashore. Layers of colored pencil slowly build up the forms. These drawings allude to a hidden history in the rocks after they have traveled long distances, become worn by sand and surf and have congregated in one place for a moment in time.

Recent exhibits include being a finalist in The Hunting Art Prize, work exhibited in EarthVisions at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, Florida, the Salmagundi Art Club in New York City, Sylvia Wald and Po Kim Art Gallery in New York City, the Mary Ryan Gallery at McMurry University and the Hub-Robeson Gallery at Penn State University. Affiliations include the National Association of Women Artists, Inc., NAWA, Florida Chapter and the Texas Association of Schools of Art. Lorenz was privileged to receive the Medal of Honor and Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation Memorial Award for Works on Paper in the 125th NAWA Members’ Exhibit in 2014.

Lorenz resides with husband Thomas McElmurry in Conroe, Texas. Her printmaking studio is located in Conroe, as well.
